《后汉演义》是民国蔡东藩在“演义救国”思想指导下创作的系列长篇历史小说之一，写刘秀光武中兴至三国混战一段历史。这是一部以正史为经，轶闻为纬，体例特殊，自批自注的演义巨作。全书文笔亲切自然，通俗易懂。
汉朝分为两个阶段，史学界称之为“前汉”和“后汉”，或者“西汉”和“东汉”。第一阶段为前汉，从公元前207年汉高祖刘邦建国起至公元25年止，首尾历时232年，共传了12位皇帝。第二阶段从光武帝刘秀于公元25年推翻王莽“新朝”恢复汉朝江山起至公元220年止，首尾历时196年，也共传了12位皇帝。因为前汉定都西面的西安，后汉定都东面的洛阳，所以前汉又称“西汉”，后汉又称“东汉”。
